Man in custody after armed barricade standoff with Memphis Police in Whitehaven lasts several hours

Officers have been at the scene at the intersection of Winchester Road and Lakeview Road since late Sunday night.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is in custody Monday morning after an armed barricade standoff with Memphis Police lasted several hours in Whitehaven after police said he fired a gunshot at officers the previous night and later shut himself in a car.

Officers had been at the scene at the intersection of Winchester Road and Lakeview Road since late Sunday night. Police said a suspect had barricaded himself with a weapon, but no one has been injured.

The situation started just before 7 p.m. on Nov. 10 when officers responded to an armed mental consumer call in the 3400 Block of Lakeview Road, where someone said the man had driven away in his personal car, but was still in the area.

About an hour later, police found the suspect at Brooks Express Store on East Brooks Road, where the suspect fired a shot at officers and then sped away from the scene in his car. No officers were injured.

Officers gave chase, which ended in the same area, where the suspect parked behind a residence and refused to leave his car.

Since then, negotiators have been trying to convince the man to surrender. Investigators said the suspect was alone in the car.

Just before 8:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11, the suspect left his vehicle and police placed him in custody, according to an MPD spokesperson.

Police said charges are pending and an investigation is underway.

All Lakeview Road lanes between Winchester Road and East Brooks Road were shut down due to the investigation.
