Man charged after crash in downtown Memphis leaves officer critically injured

Memphis Police said the crash happened just before 11 a.m. Wednesday. The officer was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A man is facing charges and a Memphis Police officer is now stable after being rushed to the hospital with critical injuries in a crash in downtown Memphis.

Jeremial Lee, 32, has been charged with altering and falsifying license plates and five counts of disregarding a stop sign.

Memphis Police said the crash happened around 11 a.m. Wednesday near South Lauderdale Street and Ratliff Lane when they said a suspect T-boned the police car.

The officer was taken to Regional One in critical condition, and police said the officer is now stable. The suspect was treated for injuries on scene and is now in custody, MPD said.

Before the incident, an officer saw a green Hyundai Genesis driving recklessly, heading west on Georgia Avenue at South Lauderdale Street, where the suspect ran the stop sign while driving at a high speed rate, according to an affidavit.

The officer tried to catch him, but the driver refused to stop, running some more stop signs. After breaking off the chase and conducting a search, the officer later found the Hyundai involved in the previously mentioned crash that injured an officer. The suspect tried to run away, but he was caught and identified as Lee.

Lee admitted to being the driver of the Hyundai.

He is scheduled to appear in court Friday, Dec. 22.
