MEMPHIS, Tennessee — The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is investigating after a teen was critically injured when a Memphis Police officer shot him during an overnight chase in Hickory Hill.
The TBI said it was called in to investigate by Shelby County District Attorney General Steve Mulroy.
Memphis Police said they were responding to a prowler call Monday, Oct. 7, 2024, just after 1 a.m. in the 6500 block of South Country Oaks Circle. They said officers saw a red Nissan Maxima speeding away and later found the Maxima in the 2800 block of Kirby Parkway, where the car crashed.
According to the TBI, officers found three suspects at the scene. TBI investigators said two of the suspects ran, and a third, a 17-year-old who was armed, "refused to comply with verbal commands to drop the weapon." The TBI agents said at some point, the teen was shot by officers "for reasons still under investigation."
MPD investigators said officers immediately gave aid and called an ambulance. The teen was taken to Regional One Hospital in critical condition.
Memphis Police said one officer was also taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
MPD officers confirmed the Nissan Maxima had been stolen from the Raines Station area on Sunday, Oct. 6, and they found multiple guns, key fobs, and a key programmer on the scene Monday.
Police are still searching for two other men.
Quince Road was blocked off at Kirby Road Monday morning due to the investigation.
The TBI will turn its findings over to the D.A. to review and determine if charges will be filed against any officers.
