MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Two Memphis Police officers are recovering from injuries Friday after an early morning chase led to a stolen truck ramming into a squad car, and the driver is now facing assault charges.

Memphis Police said their officers found a stolen truck around 1:30 a.m. Nov. 3, 2023, near JUICE Orange Mound on Park Avenue.

Officers saw a man and woman enter the truck, and attempted to confront them when the driver reversed into one of the officers, running over his foot and damaging his squad car mirror, before speeding off.

Officers chased the truck, which rammed into the squad car two more times, once on the passenger side and once on the driver's side. It eventually came to a stop near Semmes Street and Chisca Avenue.

One officer was treated on the scene for minor injuries, while another was taken to the hospital in non-critical condition.

Both people in the car were detained, and Memphis Police said the man, 59-year-old Micheal Barton, was taken to the hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

MPD said Barton was charged with two counts of assault on a first responder, car theft, intentionally evading arrest, and theft of merchandise less than $1,000. The woman was released without charges.
