MEMPHIS, Tenn. — As the trial began Monday in the murder of Memphis rapper Young Dolph, we learned two of the three suspects originally scheduled to go on trial would testify against the other suspect.
The trial began Monday, Sept. 23, 2024, for Justin Johnson, who faces charges including first-degree murder, unlawful carrying and possession of a firearm, and theft of property in the death of Young Dolph, whose real name was Adolph Thornton Jr.
An outside jury from Davidson County is hearing the case due to the heavy media attention in Shelby County.
Cornelius Smith Jr., and Hernandez Govan had originally been set to go on trial at the same time as Johnson. Smith faces charges including first-degree murder, unlawful carrying and possession of a firearm, and theft of property.
According to the opening statements by the prosecution, Smith is set to testify against Johnson in the case.
Govan is accused of ordering the hit that killed Young Dolph. During its opening statement, the defense said Govan is set to testify against Johnson.
Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy told ABC24 after the opening statements that Smith is cooperating, but he would not comment on Govan. Mulroy said both Smith and Govan’s fates will be decided be either plea or trial.
A fourth suspect, Jermarcus Johnson, pleaded guilty to three counts of accessory after the fact in October 2023, and he faces six to 12 years in jail.
The shooting death of Memphis rapper Young Dolph sent shockwaves throughout the Bluff City and nationwide nearly three years ago.
Young Dolph was fatally shot at Makeda's Cookies on Airways Boulevard on Nov. 17, 2021. Police said at the time two men got out of a stolen Mercedes-Benz and fired shots into Makeda’s Homemade Cookies, where Young Dolph was making a purchase. Police released photos taken from surveillance video that captured the shooting, which they said led to the arrests.
Under Tennessee law, Johnson faces the possibility of life in prison without the possibility of parole if found guilty.
