Suspect arrested for throwing lit firework into store is out of jail on bond

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police said they have identified and arrested the man caught on camera throwing a lit firework into a convenience store, injuring two people.

Jarquivious Jones is charged with aggravated arson, reckless endangerment with a deadly weapons, and vandalism. He is out of jail on $50,000 bond, reduced from $350,000, according to court records.

MPD released surveillance video showing a male in his late teens to early 20s lighting a firework and then throwing into a store at the counter before taking off. It happened about 10 p.m. on Monday, July 15, 2024, at the store in the 3100 block of S. Perkins.

Investigators said a small red sedan pulled into the lot, and the suspect in a gray hoodie, blue jeans, and black loafers walked to the door. As a woman was paying for items at the counter, police said the suspect lit the large firework and threw it at the counter.

According to the police affidavit, the firework landed in an imitation rose display and created a large fireball, which sent debris flying, injuring two of the employees. Police said $2,500 in merchandise was damaged.

Video showed the guy running back to the small red sedan and jumping into the backseat as the driver sped off.

Investigators said Jones surrendered to police on July 18th and admitted to throwing the firework.
