MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Shelby County Grand Jury has indicted a woman whom Memphis Police said fired a gun at another woman and began chasing her after a road rage incident.
Cortasia Wheeler, 25, is charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault, and employment of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony. She is currently in the Shelby County Jail on $500,000 bond, which was increased on June 18 from a previous bond of $250,000, according to court records.
According to MPD, officers responded to the road rage incident about 11:25 a.m. Tuesday, June 11, 2024, along I-240 near Lamar Ave. According to the police affidavit, the victim told investigators that a woman with red braids in a black Chevrolet Cobalt pulled up beside her, accused her of cutting the suspect off in traffic, then pointed a gun and fired it several times as the victim tried to drive away.
Police said the victim’s car was hit twice, and she was forced to exit the interstate onto S. Third St. Investigators said the suspect followed to the 2200 block of S. Third, when the victim’s car became immobile. The affidavit said the victim began running and begging others for help as the suspect, still armed, chased around a building until the victim was able to escape in a bystander’s vehicle.
Investigators said there was video of the incident, and Wheeler was identified and arrested after pictures were released to the public. They said several CrimeStoppers tips led them to Wheeler.
