LUCEDALE, Miss — A Mississippi sheriff's deputy is dead after they were shot and killed during a traffic stop outside of a small South Mississippi town, according to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation (MBI).
The MBI said they were called to investigate the shooting of a George County, Mississippi, Sheriff's deputy Thursday, Jan. 4, on Hwy. 98 near Lucedale, Mississippi.
The MBI said the deputy made a traffic stop at that location and was approaching the car, when someone in the car shot and killed them.
Multiple agencies then started chasing the suspect, who was tracked down near Beaumont, Mississippi, where multiple rounds of gunfire were exchanged. The MBI said the suspect was then shot and killed.
The MBI said they are still gathering evidence on what they're calling a "critical incident."
