No suspect after North Memphis shooting leaves nine-year-old girl in critical condition, Memphis police say

MPD confirmed the little girl was in a stopped car when the suspects in another vehicle pulled up and shot into the car.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — According to Memphis Police, a nine-year-old girl is injured after a shooting in North Memphis.

At 7 p.m., officers said they responded to a call about a juvenile shooting victim who arrived at a Fire Station 19. The girl was taken to Le Bonheur in critical condition, police said.

The Memphis Police Department (MPD) said the shooting happened in the 2000 block of Chelsea. They confirmed the little girl was in a stopped car when the suspects in another vehicle and shot into the car.

A woman told police that she was traveling northbound on North Hollywood Street approaching I-40 East and a white Infiniti pulled alongside her. She said that a man with a ski-mask went through the sunroof of the Infiniti and fired at her car with a long gun.

She told police that as the shots were being fired, she heard her daughter scream. She then saw that her daughter was hit by gunfire, according to MPD.

She drove to Fire Station 19 as the suspect's vehicle continued to go northbound on Hollywood, according to MPD.

The woman couldn't provide a motive for this shooting and told police she did not recognize the suspect of the shooting or their vehicle, according to MPD. She told police she could not see the other occupants inside the white Infiniti, according to MPD.

Firefighters told police that the victim was shot once in the sternum area, according to MPD.

There were other occupants inside the woman's vehicle, but they did not report any other injuries, according to MPD.

During a news conference, Sergeant Louis Brownlee called the shooting "disgusting" and cowardly.
