MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Charges have been dismissed against a man originally arrested in a shooting that left a woman in critical condition in North Memphis.

The suspect was originally charged with attempted first-degree murder with bond set at $2,000,000. According to court records, charges were dismissed Feb. 19 due to "lack of prosecution."

MPD said officers responded to a call about an attempted robbery around 4:30 p.m. Jan. 29, 2024, at the Nite and Day Food Mart in the 2200 block of Chelsea Ave.

According to the police affidavit for the original suspect, a witness told investigators the man had pistol whipped then shot a woman in the front seat of his car. Officers said they spotted the white Oldsmobile speeding away northbound on Springdale Ave. They stopped the driver at Griggs Ave. and Lambert St.

The affidavit said officers saw the victim slumped over in the car, apparently shot in the head. She was taken to Regional One Hospital in critical condition, and officers said she had been shot in the head three times, and shot several times in both legs.

According to the affidavit, the suspect waived his Miranda Rights and told officers the woman was his girlfriend and that the two had argued, then fought over his gun. The affidavit said the man claimed the gun went off during the struggle, striking the woman in the leg, then he grabbed the gun from the floorboard and shot her again in the leg, before driving to the store.

Investigators said in the affidavit that video showed the suspect beating the woman and possibly shooting her as she sat in the front seat of the car.
