Driver of UPS tractor-trailer charged with failure to yield after southeast Memphis accident

According to police, the crash happened around 9:15 p.m. at 3676 Swinnea Rd. on Thursday

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The driver of a UPS tractor-trailer that was involved in an accident in which two people died in southeast Memphis Thursday night has been charged—unlawfully committing the offense of fail to yield with serious injury/death, according to the Memphis Police Department (MPD).

Davon McDonald, 45, experienced a collision with a 2003 Mercury Marquise around 9:15 p.m. at 3676 Swinnea Rd., according to MPD.

The victims included a 48-year old male driver and a 44-year-old female passenger, according to MPD. They both were pronounced dead on the scene, according to a police report.

MPD said that the driver of the UPS tractor-trailer was exiting from a private drive before being hit by the vehicle at a high speed.

McDonald was driving a 2013 semi-truck freightliner with a 63 foot trailer, according to the report. He made a left turn from the private drive into the center turn lane, according to the report. Police said he then stopped in the center turn lane, waited for northbound travel lanes to clear, but did not totally clear the left southbound travel lane.

The victims were traveling southbound on Swinnea while part of the semi trailer was stopped in the travel lane, according to the report. It was then that they struck driver side and front end, but McDonald was arrested and transported to 201 Poplar after police arrived, according to the report.

McDonald's bond was set at $1,000 and has been paid, according to police records. His arraignment is set for June 6, according to police records.
