MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A University of Mississippi Advisor is on leave and banned from campus after being arrested for enticement of a child.
Michael Anthony Smith, 37, was arrested Aug. 20, 2024, according to Oxford Police. Investigators said a citizen had come forward that day about a possible crime, and after investigating and consulting with the District Attorney’s Office, Smith was arrested and charged. Further details on what led to the arrest were not released.
A bio page on the University of Mississippi website showed Smith worked as an Academic Advisor II at the college. The bio said he also coordinates Ole Miss’s StudentsFIRST program which helps first-generation students transition to college.
In a statement to ABC24, the university said, “We learned of the arrest late Tuesday, and the employee has been placed on leave and is not allowed on campus. The university will provide no further comment at this time.”
Oxford Police said the investigation is continuing, and they are asking anyone with more information on Smith to call them at 662-232-2400.
