MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The man charged after Memphis Police said two people were shot along Beale Street last Sunday afternoon is out of jail on $150,000 bond.
According to court records, Archie Mays, 32, posted bond Wednesday, May 3. Mays is charged with two counts of aggravated assault. A court hearing on May 9 was reset, and he is due back in court May 23.
MPD said officers responded to a shooting shortly after 3 p.m. Sunday, April 30, 2023, to the 200 block of Beale Street, in front of Alfred's. Officers found two men shot, and they were taken to Regional One Hospital in non-critical condition. They said Mays was handcuffed by Beale Street security when they arrived.
According to the police affidavit, one of the victims told investigators Mays poured a drink on his cart, damaging merchandise. The affidavit said the victim told officers he pushed Mays to defend his property, and then Mays pulled a gun and shot him. The affidavit said that man was grazed on his head.
The affidavit said an uninvolved bystander told police he heard one shot before a bullet went through his right hand into his left hand.
According to the affidavit, investigators reviewed video which they said showed Mays and his girlfriend approaching a souvenir cart, and the vendor pushing Mays, then Mays and his girlfriend beginning to fight. Investigators said the video showed Mays pulling a gun from his pants then running toward the vendor, and the vendor falling as Mays pointed the gun at him.
Alfred's released a statement following the shooting: "We are stunned about the unfortunate incident that took place on Beale Street today.
