Police presence to increase in Shelby County shopping areas for holidays

Operation Jingle Bells kicked off Friday and will run through Sunday, Dec. 31.

SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — The Shelby County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) will increase its presence in several shopping areas throughout the holidays, according to a news release.

The sheriff's office said Operation Jingle Bells kicked off Friday and will run through Sunday, Dec. 31. A high concentration will be in the shopping areas around Wolfchase, Canada Road, Macon/Houston Levee, Highway 64, Winchester, Hacks Cross, and Shelby Drive.

During the operation, deputies will focus on patrolling store parking lots, contacting store employees and management, and conducting increased traffic enforcement. The sheriff's office said they hope to deter car break-ins and shoplifting, as well as keep traffic moving on the roads and parking lots safer for shoppers.

These efforts will be coordinated with other local area law enforcement, including those located in Bartlett, Collierville, Germantown, and Memphis. The Tennessee Highway Patrol will also assist.

The operation will use deputy sheriffs from patrol and traffic bureaus during various week days. Concentration will be placed on Saturdays and Sundays in parking lots, businesses, high traffic areas, and other locations. Additional officers from the SCSO reserves unit will help on the weekends when crowds and traffic are at their peak, the sheriff's office said.
