Man charged in Railgarten shooting put back in jail on $100,000 bond after Judge Bill Anderson released him

"We’re pleased with today’s outcome," Shelby County D.A. Steve Mulroy said. His office challenged Judge Anderson's decision to release Detawn Gunn.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The man arrested in relation to the shooting outside of the Railgarten restaurant is back in jail on a $100,000 bond after originally being released on his own recognizance by Judge Bill Anderson, according to Shelby County District Attorney General Steve Mulroy.

Detawn Gunn, 30, faces multiple charges including five counts of attempted second degree murder, five counts of employment of a firearm during commission of a dangerous felony, and two counts of vandalism of property ranging $1000-2500. Bond was set at $500,000 during a hearing Aug. 23, then court records show he was being released on his own recognizance (ROR) after a hearing on Aug. 26 with Judge Bill Anderson.

In response to the ROR order, Mulroy's Office said, "We’re disappointed the suspect in the Railgarten shooting was released on his own recognizance. In arguing against a bond reduction, we presented victim testimony, video of the shooting, and photos of the victim’s injuries. While we understand the rationale and respect the Court’s decision, we disagree with it. Going forward, we’re confident we’ll be able to prove our case and see that the defendant is held accountable for his actions."

Monday, Shelby County Criminal Court Judge Jennifer Mitchell ruled in favor of the D.A.'s appeal, setting a $100,000 bond and ordering Gunn back in jail.

"We’re pleased with today’s outcome," Mulroy's office said in a statement. "Filing the emergency writ was the right decision to ensure the safety of the public.  Although we would have preferred a higher amount, securing a bond in this case was necessary to uphold public trust and maintain safety in our community."

Details on the shooting

The Memphis Police Department (MPD) initially reported that three people were shot but court records state that four men were injured outside of Railgarten on Friday, Aug. 16. Officers found four victims suffering from gunshot wounds and two cars that had been hit by bullets at the scene of the shooting.

The police affidavit stated that a victim saw Gunn get into a gray Lexus. The victim proceeded to follow the car to E.H. Crump Boulevard and Camilla, where Gunn fired a shot at him.

MPD cameras in the area captured the gray Lexus bearing with an Arkansas dealer tag, fleeing the scene. Investigators learned that the tag on the gray Lexus had been used on multiple vehicles since the shooting

Officials discovered that Gunn was issued a traffic citation on June 28, as he was in a gray Honda Accord.

According to the affidavit, Violent Crimes Unit (VCU) investigators interviewed Gunn on Thursday, Aug. 21.

Gunn told investigators that he swaps the tag between his cars because he works as a mechanic. He admitted to using the tag on other cars but denied using the tag on the gray Lexus used in the shooting.

Gunn was booked into the Shelby County jail Wednesday, Aug. 20, records show.
