MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Shelby County Grand Jury has indicted an inmate accused of trying to stab a deputy jailer to death at the Shelby County Jail at 201 Poplar.
Adrian Maclin was indicted Oct. 1, 2024, on charges of attempted first-degree murder, aggravated assault on a first responder, aggravated assault, and contraband. He was in jail after being indicted on previous charges of aggravated assault and being a convicted felon with a handgun. He is currently in the Shelby County Jail on $625,000 bond.
Jail attack
According to the affidavit, on Jan. 22, 2024, at about 5:40 p.m., the corrections officer was feeding inmates on the 4th floor. The jailer told all inmates to go into their cells while the food trays were distributed, and according to the affidavit, that’s when Maclin started walking toward the officer “in an aggressive manner.”
The affidavit said Maclin ignored further orders to enter his cell, and pulled out a sharpened piece of metal from his waistband saying, “I’ve got something for you.” It said Maclin then began stabbing the jailer several times as the jailer sprayed a chemical agent to no effect. The report said Maclin told the jailer “I’m gonna kill you.”
The jailer was stabbed several times in the arm. Other officers who came to assist ordered Maclin to drop the weapon, and according to the affidavit, he refused and began swinging it at them. It said Maclin was sprayed again, and he threw the piece of metal into an empty cell.
According to the affidavit, the attack was caught on video.
