MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Shelby County Grand Jury will take up the case against a Frayser woman accused of shooting and killing the father of children during a fight.
Charges of second-degree murder against Elita Bean were sent to the grand jury on Sept. 12, 2024. She is out of jail after posting $50,000 bond.
The Memphis Police Department responded to the shooting May 21, 2024, just after 10 p.m. in the 3300 block of Ardmore Street, where officers found Terrence Bean dead from a gunshot wound in the kitchen of a home.
According to the police affidavit, when officers arrived at the scene, they found three children outside who told them that their mother shot their father. Investigators found Elita Bean and Terrence Bean in the kitchen, the father on the floor. Investigators said Elita Bean told them the couple had been fighting over a gun when it fired. Officers found three spent shell casings on the floor.
According to the affidavit, one of the children told investigators the couple had been fighting over keys, and that their mother grabbed a knife and tried to stab their father. The child told police the two went into the bedroom and continued to argue, then went back to the kitchen and continued to fight. The child told investigators that Elita Bean asked them to get her gun, but their father got instead, handed it to her, and told her to shoot him. The child said Elita Bean fired three times, according to the affidavit.
The medical examiner said in the affidavit the victim appeared to have been shot and stabbed. Investigators said they found a knife in a garbage can and a gun on the bedroom.
The affidavit said Elita Bean was "highly intoxicated and was not able to give a statement" when questioned.
The incident happened hours before another shooting occurred in Frayser, leaving another man dead.
