MEMPHIS, Tenn — The victim of a shooting in East Memphis spoke to ABC24 about the incident as she recovers.
28-year-old Cleon Osby got off work at the Wendy’s on Highland at 3 a.m. Thursday morning. She then walked to Valero because she said Ubers are cheaper from there.
That’s when two men approached her, and she did everything she could to protect herself.
“When I pepper sprayed him, he took one hand off the gun,” Osby said. She said he then wiped his face and shot her.
Although waiting outside the Valero late at night is dangerous, she said it’s worth saving the money. Osby said it’s $32 from her job to her home and $9 from Valero to her home, even though they’re just up the road from each other.
“I don’t even understand why they don’t have a full patrol going on right there in that area,” Osby said. “I feel like that area is a high crime risk area anyway.”
Business owners close to that gas station, like Jahad, manager of Smooth Wireless, agree crime is a growing problem.
“Shootings, all that, it’s messing up businesses around this corner,” Jahad said. “A lot of customers been scared. We've been getting a lot of complaints from customers.”
Osby said she’s just glad this situation didn’t get any worse.
“He could’ve shot me in my back,” she said.
Osby said she has seen the two men involved in the incident before at the Wendy’s she works at on Highland. The Wendy’s manager would not share any information on the individuals or the situation.
If you have any information on the suspects, call the Memphis Police Department.
