MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) said Thursday that they have made one arrest in Nashville for threats made to Southwind High School.
The SCSO said about 7:20 a.m. on Wednesday, someone contacted Southwind making the threats, and the school was placed on lockdown. ABC24 crews at the school found several SCSO vehicles there.
Social media posts being shared by Southwind parents and students online showed a post with a picture of a gun with a threat to shoot up the school.
Thursday, the Shelby County Sheriff's Office held a press conference with MSCS Superintendent Marie Feagins.
SCSO officials said the Sheriff's Office secured a felony warrant for threats of mass violence at a school and sent two detectives to Nashville to arrest a 15-year-old boy.
They said they are bringing him back to Memphis to transfer him to the custody of Juvenile Court so Judge Sugarmon can determine if he needs to remain in custody or be released to his parents to await trial.
SCSO officials said they spoke with the DA's office about if the charges needed to be filed in Nashville or Memphis, and they made the decision to secure the warrant in Shelby County so that he can be held accountable in the local court system.
Shelby County Sheriff Floyd Bonner said the reason why someone in Nashville was making threats to Memphis is under investigation.
This is the sixth arrest made in connection to the threats leading to MSCS school lockdowns.
