Student charged after gun found at high school in Fox Meadows

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A 17-year-old student is charged after a gun was found at a school in the Fox Meadows area, Memphis Police said. 

The Memphis Police Department responded to an armed party call just before 8:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 5, 2024, at Power Center Academy Hickory Hill High School. 

The school officer told investigators they found a loaded gun inside the student's backpack when they were checking for marijuana. The officer told police he had smelled a strong odor of marijuana in a classroom, and they checked seven people inside. When they searched the student, they said they found a weed vape and the loaded gun in the backpack.

According to MPD, the student told investigators he had the gun for protection.

The student was taken to juvenile court and charged with carrying a weapon on school property.
