Suspects rammed truck into City Gear store in South Memphis, and thieves struck again hours later

Memphis Police first responded to a prowler call Monday around 4 a.m. in the 1700 block of South Third Street.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Suspects are on the run after ramming a truck into a City Gear store during a break-in Monday morning in South Memphis. And then ABC24 cameras were on the scene when the store was hit again hours later in broad daylight.

The Memphis Police Department (MPD) responded to a prowler call Nov. 6 around 4 a.m. in the 1700 block of South Third Street at City Gear, where officers saw a GMC Savan box truck and three other vehicles backed into the left side of the store.

Police said suspects rammed the truck into the sidewall to enter the building, leaving a huge hole.  Officers were not able to detain anyone as the suspects drove away in an unknown direction on South Third Street when police arrived.

There is no suspect information as of yet. Officers could not determine the make or model of the three other vehicles. The truck had rear damage, according to MPD.

The store’s manager told police that the number of items taken is unknown.

Hours later, as crews were there to repair the damage, an ABC24 crew returned to the scene to follow up. We saw several cars circling, then a group of suspects walked over and started removing boxes from the scene. The repairs crews ran for safety and our crew headed to a safe location to call 911 as they saw more people, some in masks, at the scene taking more boxes.

According to Memphis Police, several men took multiple pairs of Nike shoes and other apparel. The estimated cost of the merchandise is $50,000, they said.

One of the vehicles used was a light blue Chrysler 200 with MS tags DAY8210, according to MPD.

They said no arrests have been made at this time.
