TBI: Woman shot by Munford police officer after early morning chase into Covington

Agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigations responded to the reported shooting at Highway 51 and Hope Street.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Tennessee Bureau of Investigations (TBI) is investigating after a woman was shot by a Munford Police officer after a chase into Covington early Monday morning.

The TBI said preliminary information showed it all began about 2:10 a.m. Aug. 19, 2024, when Munford Police tried to make a traffic stop involving a woman. They said she refused to pull over, and led police on a chase along Highway 51 into Covington.

Near Highway 51 and Hope Street, investigators said stop sticks were used to stop the vehicle. The TBI said at that point, a Munford officer approached the vehicle and fired a shot, hitting the woman who was driving. Investigators have not said what led to the officer firing.

The TBI said the woman was taken to a local hospital and no officers were injured.

Once the TBI investigation is complete, agents will turn their findings over to the District Attorney to determine if any charges will be filed.

The officer involved in the shooting has not been identified.

ABC24 reached out to Munford Police, who turned all questions over to the TBI. We're told it is policy that the officer would be put on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of this investigation.

“It’s too close to home and it’s close to the businesses. It’s kind of like, scary, scary because we have children here, and we have to protect the children," she said.
