MPD says teens shot each other during attempted robbery near Frayser community center

Memphis Police said the shooting happened around 6 p.m. Tuesday.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Two teens are fighting for their lives after being shot near a community center in Frayser Tuesday evening, according to Memphis Police.

Memphis Police said their officers responded to a shooting which happened about 5:50 p.m. March 5, 2024, in the 2500 block of St Elmo Avenue. Two teen boys, ages 15 and 16, were found shot and taken to Regional One Hospital in critical condition. 

According to investigators, one of the teens told them the other teen was trying to rob him and steal his gun and property. He told police the other teen was also joined by two to three others, and the teen approached and began to pat him down. The teen told police shots were fired while the when the other teen tried to steal his property.

MPD said the one teen who said he was being robbed was shot twice in the legs, and the other teen was hit at least three times.

The teen told police he threw his guns into the woods, and police said they weren't able to find it. They said they did find a gun near the other teen. Investigators said they also found a backpack with marijuana, digital scale, and a gun magazine with accused teen.

One of the teens is in police custody, MPD said.
