SAVANNAH, Tenn. — A man was indicted after a deputy with the Hardin County Sheriff's Department was shot and killed while responding to a call in September 2021.

According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, a Hardin County Grand Jury returned a 23-count indictment against Todd Stricklin, 49, on Monday.

The charges include first-degree murder, felony murder, five counts of attempted first-degree murder, five counts of possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony, aggravated kidnapping, six counts of aggravated assault, domestic assault, interference with an emergency call, reckless endangerment and evading arrest.

The TBI and Hardin County Sheriff's Department said Deputy Matthew Locke was shot and killed when he was called to a home on Nance Bend Road in Clifton for a domestic disturbance.

As Locke approached the home to help, investigators said Stricklin shot him.

Locke was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died.

Investigators said Stricklin ran from the home into a wooden area. A few hours later, Tennessee Highway Patrol officers arrested him.

Stricklin is in custody at the Chester County Jail where he is being held without bond.
