SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — The Shelby County Sheriff's Office said a man wanted in the death of a couple July 1, 2024, in southeast Shelby County has been captured.
Jaylan McCollins is charged with two counts of first-degree murder and unlawful possession of a weapon.
The Shelby County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) issued a BOLO (Be On The Lookout) for McCollins a day after the July 1, 2024, shooting. On Aug. 19, the sheriff's office said McCollins was caught by the Fugitive Apprehension Team (F.A.T.) and Burglary, Robbery, Auto Theft Unit (B.R.A.T.) in downtown Memphis.
The sheriff's office said deputies responded to the scene at the 7600 block of Newfound Gap Rd. around 5:15 a.m. Monday, July 1. When they arrived, they found a woman who had been shot and killed, and a man who had been shot. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, where he later died. The D.A.'s office identified the victims as Anthonese Stewart and Gary Newman.
Several witnesses on the scene told ABC24 the shooting was a domestic violence incident, with one witness saying they heard shouting before gunshots rang out.
