KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A University of Memphis track and field athlete is facing charges in Knox County, Tennessee, accused of rape.

WBIR reports 21-year-old Jerome Nchiyao Dooley is charged with raping a woman while she was “physically helpless,” according to court documents. Dooley, of La Vergne, Tennessee, was charged in Knox County with rape and vandalism up to $1000.

The alleged assault happened on July 17, 2018, according to the grand jury indictment. Dooley has bonded out of jail and is due in court on Nov. 14 on the rape charge.

Dooley is currently a University of Memphis student and on the track & field team.

“University of Memphis Athletics was made aware of an off-campus incident involving a student-athlete. We are fully cooperating with authorities, and no additional comment will be made while the investigation is ongoing.”
