MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Bond has been set at $750,000 for a man charged in a 2023 beating death.

United States Marshals Service officials said Alfred Draper, 31, was captured July 31, 2024.

Draper is charged with first-degree murder in the Oct. 11, 2023, beating death of Shanqualus Morgan, 46.

Marshals said Draper beat Morgan with a pole and left him in a field. Morgan was found on Oct. 11 and taken to Regional One in critical condition before dying days later due to head trauma, according to the Marshals' release.

According to the Shelby County District Attorney General's Office, Draper was allegedly seen on surveillance video hitting Morgan with his car, chasing him down, and beating him unconscious with the pole. The D.A.'s office said another suspect was reportedly on the scene helping Draper in the murder.

"A few days later, MPD detectives obtained an arrest warrant charging Draper with first degree murder," the release said. "The case was later adopted for a fugitive investigation by the USMS Two Rivers Violent Fugitive Task Force in Memphis."

The release said U. S. Marshals, Memphis Police Department officers and Shelby County Sheriff's deputies found Draper inside a vehicle behind a shopping center at Park Avenue and Getwell Road.
