Memphis Fire rules fire at Walmart on Winchester accidental

Memphis Fire said no injuries were reported.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — After initially saying a fire at a Memphis Walmart was intentionally set, the Memphis Fire Department (MFD) has now ruled the fire as accidental.

MFD said around 9 p.m. May 7, 2024, they responded to a fire inside the Walmart Supercenter on 7535 Winchester Rd.

The fire was mostly extinguished before MFD arrived, and firefighters did not need additional crews, MFD said.

Memphis Fire said no injuries were reported.

Investigators said the fire was accidental and caused by an electrical malfunction. It was in the women's clothing area, damaging one clothing rack, according to officials. The sprinkler system did not activate.

MFD has not said how much the total damage would cost.
