MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis woman has been charged with a shooting during a fight that injured a 14-year-old girl outside of Whitehaven Community Center.
Tequilla Curry is charged with aggravated assault, misdemeanor assault, vandalism, reckless endangerment with a deadly weapon, reckless endangerment - discharging a firearm from within a motor vehicle, convicted felon in possession of a handgun, and carrying weapons on public parks, playgrounds, civic centers, and other public recreational buildings and grounds. She is currently in the Shelby County Jail on $275,000 bond.
Officers with the Memphis Police Department responded to the shooting scene in the 4300 block of Graceland Dr. at the Whitehaven Community Center around 4 p.m. on Sept. 5, 2024. Investigators said a 14-year-old girl was found and taken to Le Bonheur in non-critical condition.
According to the police affidavit, the girl who was shot had gotten into a fight with another girl outside the community center. The affidavit said during the fight, the victim was pepper-sprayed by a woman, later identified as Curry. Police said at some point during the fight, the victim realized she had been shot in the arm.
According to the affidavit, a witness told investigators that Curry had been the one to get a gun and fire shots after pepper-spraying the girl. They said she fired again as she took off in a black Chevy Malibu. Investigators said surveillance video from the scene corroborated the victim and witness's accounts of what happened.
The girl was taken to Le Bonheur and is expected to be okay. Investigators said another woman at the community center reported her car had also been hit by gunfire.
The affidavit said when questioned, Curry admitted to using pepper-spray and firing a gun during the fight.
