MEMPHIS, Tennessee — A woman is dead and a man is facing charges after a shooting happened in South Memphis, leading to a police chase late Sunday night.
Maury Kennedy, 18, has been charged with theft of property, $10,000-$60,000, possession of a controlled substance with intent to manufacture/deliver/sell marijuana and intentionally evading arrest in an automobile.
Officers with the Memphis Police Department were responding to a disturbance call on Sept. 29, 2024, just before 11 p.m. in the 1700 block of Elvis Presley Boulevard when they heard multiple gunshots across the street at the Fast Fuel at 1387 Elvis Presley Boulevard.
They then saw a black sedan speed away from the scene and a woman lying in the parking lot hurt. Police called an ambulance and an officer tried to stop the sedan, but the driver refused to stop, leading to a chase.
First responders took the injured woman to Regional One Health, but she was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Officers chased the black sedan to the area of Millbranch Road and Winchester Road, where the sedan crashed into an MPD car and became disabled. Police then took the suspect into custody.
Investigators discovered the car, a 2017 Honda Accord, had been stolen on Sept. 21, 2024. They also found 100 grams of marijuana inside.
An investigation is underway.
