MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police are searching for a suspect after a woman was hit by gunfire coming from outside inside her Cooper-Young home following New Year’s celebrations.

MPD officers responded to the call about 2:40 a.m. Jan. 1, 2024, in the 1000 block of New York St. near Walker Ave. A man told investigators his mom was upstairs in her room when several shots were fired from the north side of the home. He said his mom went to the window to see what was going on, and several shots were fired through the wall, hitting both her legs. MPD said she was taken to Regional One Hospital in non-critical condition.

Investigators said a woman told officers she heard a man and woman arguing on New York St., and heard the woman say she had a knife. They said a man told them he heard shots coming from several directions.

Investigators said they found glass on a front door shot out along New York St. and a vehicle also hit by gunfire.

MPD officers said they found shell casings of several different calibers in the area. They said they are also reviewing possible camera footage of the suspect(s).
