MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Shelby County leaders approved a nearly $34 million additional investment for a new high school in Frayser during a county commission vote Monday.
According to a news release from the county Dec. 3, 2024, Shelby County Mayor Lee Harris, Memphis-Shelby County Schools Superintendent Dr. Marie Feagins, Chairman Michael Whaley, and Chairwoman Dorse Coleman had reached the agreement, which brings the county’s total investment to $112 million.
The Shelby County Board of Commissioners voted 10-0 to approve the agreement Monday, Dec. 16, providing $33,910,683 funding, according to a MSCS news release.
The funding package includes the following:
- Total project investment of $112 million
- Strategic allocation of $33.9 million in immediate funding
- Additional $9 million over 5 years for municipal schools' construction roadmap
- Maintained commitment to finding a solution for a new school in Cordova
The facility will also feature the following:
- Advanced broadcast facilities
- Cutting-edge graphic design classrooms
- Modern sports facilities
- Innovative open learning spaces
- JROTC facilities
Mayor Harris previously said this project is a “blueprint” for future plans to support students. He also said the plan in Frayser would not take away money from the planned high school in Cordova.
"We are grateful for this investment to kickstart overdue school improvements and provide students with the safe, modern spaces they deserve in the Frayser community and beyond," Feagins said.
