MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Arlington Community Schools announced Monday night Superintendent Jeff Mayo passed away.

The district shared the news in a Facebook post with this statement:

"With heavy hearts, we share the sad news of the passing of our Superintendent, Mr. Jeff Mayo. Today, we learned from his family that Mr. Mayo lost his courageous battle with cancer. As our entire district of employees, families and students begins to process this loss, we wanted to reach out to our school community as soon as we learned.

Please keep Mr. Mayo’s family, friends and our entire school family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time. Let's come together to honor his remarkable life and the lasting legacy he leaves at Arlington Community Schools. Thank you."

Mayo was named Superintendent of Arlington Community Schools by a unanimous vote of the ACS Board of Education in April 2020. The 36-year educator is the district's second superintendent.

He was also named a finalist as the National Superintendent of the Year by the National Association of School Superintendents (NASS) in 2023, serving as the only representative in Tennessee.

The district has not announced future plans to find an intertim superintendent.
