MEMPHIS, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) – Students at Delano elementary are bringing the world of news to their classmates at the Frayser school.
These students are learning the basics of journalism, leadership, and working together as a team.
The third, fourth, and fifth graders at Delano elementary are covering the news that matters every morning at the school’s news station.
Tyler Reed, an anchor, and fifth-grade student said he enjoys his role.
“Just the thrill of doing it, being on-air to say what’s going on,” said Reed.
Reed is one of DTV’s anchors – the person who reads and writes the news stories. But he also works behind the scenes as a Director.
“In the morning, I make sure that everything is working,” said Reed. “I make sure the laptops are up and running, the graphics are in order, the switcher is operating, the music is working, the sound is correct.”
The DTV Newsteam is getting ready to move into their new studio and set.
The large news team works just like the pros.
They sit in a morning meeting to go over and select the big stories, then write each story to put in their show – local news, school news, national news, sports – even the weather.
They all are learning about the basics of journalism, being leaders, building confidence, and the importance of teamwork.
Tarlayah Chism, a fifth-grade and student at Delano, told us the roles in front of and behind the camera are all important.
“Without them, we couldn’t do it.”
