MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Faced with some of the lowest literacy scores in the state, Memphis-Shelby County Schools is stepping up efforts to promote a love for reading with in-school tutoring programs.
The district announced Thursday a major effort in which it will work with Literacy Mid-South to work with 18 different schools to extend the tutoring programs.
The CEO for Literacy Mid-South said the non-profit is ready and able to help students.
“Second and third grade, literacy proficiency, during the day tutoring, these are the things we are ready to do,” said Sam O’Bryant, MPA. “We done it before. We started last year, but this year we are doubling the effort and so we are looking forward to helping more students."
This new venture hopes to help 2,500 MSCS second and third graders.
O’Bryant also said the non-profit is always looking for additional funding. Learn how to help at https://www.literacymidsouth.org/.
