Attention MSCS Parents! Here's your chance to get to know the superintendent candidates

This will be the first time a superintendent will be hired from outside the MSCS district since Kriner Cash was hired back in 2008.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Parents in Tennessee's largest public school district are getting their chance to meet the final three candidates for the top job at Memphis-Shelby County Schools.

The two-day event kicked off Thursday,  Feb. 1, 2024, when the superintendent hopefuls got a chance to see the city they could call home.

The more than a year long search is nearing its conclusion, following the resignation of the previous superintendent back in August 2022.

The three finalists for the position were decided this past December. The candidates include Dr. Marie Feagins, Dr. Yolanda Brown, and Dr. Cheryl Proctor.

A full resume of each candidate can be found by clicking their names below.

  • Dr. Feagins currently serves as the Chief of Leadership in Detroit. During her time in the district, Feagins helped improve graduation rates at a majority of the schools with initiatives and academic monitoring tools.
  • Dr. Brown is the Head of Academics for Atlanta Public Schools. Brown also served as the Associate Superintendent in the district from 2016-20, where she helped improve ELA and math scores on state tests.
  • Dr. Proctor is the Deputy Superintendent at Portland Public Schools. Proctor has helped improve reading and math scores in the district and has also serve as the Assistant Superintendent at the School District of Philadelphia.

Parents will have the chance to meet the three finalists Thursday at the MSCS Teaching and Learning Academy at 2485 Union Avenue between at 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.

On Friday, the three finalists will individually interview with the MSCS school board. According to the school district's website, a decision on who the superintendent will be is expected by the end of February. The new superintendent will begin their new role by the start of July.
