MSCS school board member drops from race for re-election

District 7 school board member Frank Johnson cited health concerns as the reason he's dropping from the race.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A sitting member of the Memphis-Shelby County School Board is dropping out of the race for re-election, he announced on social media Friday, meaning the school board will have at least two new members after the Aug. 1 general election.

District 7 school board member Frank Johnson announced on Facebook he's officially dropping out of the race, citing recovery from a recent stroke and family loss as to why.

"I have decided to discontinue my bid for re-election for the District 7 School Board seat," Johnson said. "I will, instead, take this time to focus on physically and mentally recovering from a recent stroke and now the loss of my beloved sister, who passed away last week."

Johnson's withdrawal from the school board race means at least two school board seats will be filled by new members after the Aug. 1 general election. District 4 incumbent Kevin Woods also will not seek re-election.
