MEMPHIS, Tenn. — MSCS newest Superintendent Dr. Marie Feagins announced her transition team on April 25 on a press release, the group includes a mix of educators, former law enforcement leaders, community members and business leaders.
“It is important for me to hit the ground running and see results fast where possible,” said Dr. Feagins. “I know my vision is strong and will yield positive outcomes. But the ‘how’ is equally important to the ‘what.’ These seasoned educators, students, and community and business leaders will share their journeys and provide sharp recommendations for solutions.”
The team is conformed by over 60 people, that MSCS says are K-12 education experts and community members.
The transition team is divided in five areas: student achievement, business operations, strategic communications and partnerships, next-level readiness and inclusive excellence.
The team itself will be co-chaired by Stefani Everson-Phillips who serves as MSCS Director of External Communications and JB Smiley, Jr., an attorney and chairman of the Memphis City Council.
Other notable members include Dr. Angela Whitelaw, the MSCS deputy superintendent and Faculty Assembly Vice-President of the Christian Brothers University Dr. Cynthia Alexander Mitchell who will both co-chaired the area of student achievement.
Former MPD Chief Toney Armstrong will be joining MSCS Chief Financial Officer Tito Langston to co-chair the business operations section.
Meanwhile, MSCS Internal Communications Specialist Julian Cross and Shelby County Government's Director of Innovation & Performance Analysis Danielle Inez will co-chair the strategic communications and partnerships sector.
According to the statement, the Council of the Great City Schools (CGCS) will support the team as several of their members have also joined the team.
“We look forward to spending quality time with Dr. Feagins and her transition team,” said CGCS Superintendent-in-Residence Dr. Michael Hinojosa. “She is dedicated to getting it right and is bringing the right people to the table to ensure positive outcomes. It is to be commended.”
