MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Wednesday was National Walk to School Day. It’s a day to promote physical activity and safety for kids and their families while walking to school.
Shelby County Schools partnered with ‘Healthy Kids and Teens’ to celebrate. Students, parents, and school staff walked from McBride Rugby Field on South Hollywood to Maxine Smith STEAM Academy. Some students carried signs to commemorate the occasion.
"So many times we jump in the car and go, but we can ride a bike, we can walk together, we can find other routes to get to school,” said Andy Demster, Principal at Maxine Smith Steam Academy. “We are promoting healthy living through healthy eating and active kids before and after care. So, a lot of these students here are a part of our before care program and we are getting out and getting some exercise this morning and having a good time with it."
