SHELBY COUNTY, Tenn. — Some Memphis Shelby County Schools students may be headed back to class on Monday without a full-time teacher—but fewer will than last year, according to an MSCS representative.
MSCS, the largest school district in Tennessee, employs 6,000 teachers at 160 district-run schools. The 180 vacant positions listed on their website make up 3% of the total number needed.
Among the schools needing the most teachers are Campbell Elementary, Kirby High School and Highland Oaks Middle.
Some of the subjects still needing instructors include Art, Special Education and Physics.
MSCS said in an email that their plan to make sure students are covered in each class include combining classes with fewer students and having qualified administrators, substitutes, and remote instructors fill in.
Editor's note: A previous version of this story said that there were 300 open teaching positions at MSCS, that number was for all available positions within the school district, including non-teaching positions. This article has been edited to reflect the most recent, accurate data and to give context to the number of open positions to the number of total positions within the district.
