MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis-Shelby County Schools (MSCS) has a new director of literacy, as Superintendent Dr. Marie Feagins selected Dr. Jared Myracle for the leadership role, the school district announced on Thursday.

In his new role Myracle, will lead the district in their reading and writing proficiently efforts for MSCS students.

“As a longtime leader in this work, Dr. Myracle is guided by a fundamental principle—which I share—that literacy is the foundation of all learning,” Feagins said. “He is dedicated to achieving ambitious results for kids.”

Originally from Jackson, Tennessee, Myracle previously served as Senior Director of English/Language Arts, Literacy, and Humanities at the Tennessee Department of Education, and more recently as the Senior Director of Programs at Impact Florida, a nonprofit that works on building educator capacity.

Myracle also worked as Chief Academic Officer for Jackson-Madison County Schools, which MSCS describes as "transformational work" that doubled the number of kindergarten students scoring above average on a standardized phonics.

Myracle is a Doctor of Education and Master of Education, degrees he obtained from Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, as well as a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Union University.

"Student achievement and transformation drive Dr. Myracle’s work, as evidenced by his numerous successes in schools and districts across West Tennessee," states a MSCS press release. "He increased student achievement as a teacher and an administrator by leading schools to the top 5% for growth in the state and the top 10% for achievement in the state."
