MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The deadline to complete the Tennessee Promise application was extended to May 31 announced the Tennessee Higher Education Commission (THEC) amid issues with the new FAFSA online form.

Originally due on May 15, the deadline was extended as students across the country struggle to complete the new version of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), giving students an extra two weeks to qualify for the state’s tuition-free higher education program.

"Tennessee has an unwavering commitment to providing pathways for students to succeed in post-high school education and training," said Gov. Bill Lee. "Due to extraordinary circumstances beyond our control, we are extending the FAFSA filing deadline for the Tennessee Promise scholarship program to May 31."

Similar to those in other states, Tennessee Promise provides scholarships and mentoring to high school seniors to attend a community or technical college free of tuition and fees. Tennessee Promise, covers the costs not covered by the Pell grant or the HOPE scholarship and students can use it in any of the Tennessee community colleges or a college of applied technology.

“Expanding access to higher education remains a top priority for Tennessee,” Dr. Steven Gentile, THEC Executive Director, said. “By extending the application deadline, we are removing barriers and empowering more students to pursue their dreams of a college education.”

As the federal government updates the FAFSA form, students and parents have reported glitches and technical problems when completing the online form. For others, the updated form presents a difficulty as it is a new online program. For students and family members who experience difficulties, THEC recommends asking for help to one of the following:

  • Reaching out to their college advisor or high school counselor
  • Call the THEC/TSAC FAFSA Hotline at 1-800-342-1663
  • Email fafsa.help@tn.gov
  • Contact the Ayers Foundation Trust or tnAchieves
