Tennessee Department of Education releases state, district, and school-level TCAP results. Here's how MSCS scored

The department said the results released Monday, June 24, 2024, include most fall 2023 end-of-course (EOC) exams and spring 2024 exams.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Tennessee Department of Education has released the state, district, and school-level results from the 2023-2024 Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP) testing.

The department said the results released Monday, June 24, 2024, include both fall 2023 end-of-course (EOC) exams and spring 2024 exams in English Language Arts (ELA), mathematics, science, and social studies, with the exception of math EOC data. The department said that information will be available later in the fall.

MSCS data

According to the state's data, 27.4% of Memphis-Shelby County Schools third graders met or exceeded expectations on the ELA exam. That compares to 42% of third graders statewide who met or exceeded expectations on that test.

The data shows 29.4% of MSCS fourth graders met or exceeded expectations on the ELA exam, compared to 44% of fourth graders statewide.

MSCS said students in the district who met or exceeded expectations from 2023 to 2024 increased in eight out of 10 categories.

MSCS said elementary students in grades three through five improved in all tested categories, with the greatest improvements in ELA and math. In ELA, MSCS said elementary students who made a proficient score (met or exceeded expectations) increased from 23.2% in 2023 to 26.0% in 2024. In math, they went from 20.9% in 2023 to 23.7% in 2024.

MSCS said sixth through eighth graders held steady or showed modest improvements overall, with the greatest gain in math, improving from 12.1% in 2023 to 14.9% in 2024. Those ELA scores fell slightly, from 17.2 % in 2023 to 17.1% in 2024. MSCS said the science and social studies scores improved.

MSCS said high school students improved in science, from 22.2% proficiency in 2023 to 26% proficiency, but their social studies proficiency rate declined slightly. Those students also improved in ELA, from 26.6% to 28%. Math End-of-Course (EOC) testing scores are not yet available.

“We are dedicated to preparing our students for greatness,” said Superintendent Dr. Marie N. Feagins. “We celebrate this positive momentum and are confident that we will continue to move in this direction.”

Statewide results

Statewide, the Tennessee Department of Education said 39% of all students are meeting grade level expectations in ELA testing, with proficiency gains in most tested grades. It said elementary and high school students continue to out-perform pre-pandemic levels.

In math, 40% of third through eighth graders are meeting grade level expectations, with an almost three percentage point gain for 5th and 7th graders.

The state said proficiency rates held steady for science, with an increase of one percentage point in overall student proficiency.

The state said there was a one percentage point gain for all students tested in social studies, continuing improvements over the last three years.

"Tennessee's strategic education investments have resulted in steady growth for students across the state," said Gov. Bill Lee. "As we continue our work to ensure that all Tennessee students are learning on grade level, we remain committed to supporting teachers and empowering families with multiple pathways to achievement so every student can thrive in their academic journey."
