Three Memphis charter schools closing due to 'unsustainable low enrollment'

Leaders called an emergency board meeting Wednesday, June 26, to discuss a notice of violations and potential revocation from the Achievement School District.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Scholars has announced the closing of its three campuses after facing "unsustainable low enrollment."

Leaders called an emergency board meeting Wednesday, June 26, to discuss a notice of violations and potential revocation from the Achievement School District (ASD).

Memphis Scholars said despite efforts to increase enrollment, its numbers have continued to decrease, with the COVID-19 pandemic creating a significant drop. At the 2022-23 school year's end, it had 430 students enrolled across the campuses. Only 101 students are enrolled for the 2024-25 school year.

The school system's website lists Memphis Scholars South Campus at 90 W. Olive Ave. in South Memphis, and a Memphis Scholars Caldwell-Guthrie campus at 951 Chelsea Ave. in North Memphis.

With a heavy heart, Memphis Scholars has made the difficult decision to voluntarily close our three campuses due to unsustainable low enrollment. Despite efforts to boost enrollment over the years, the numbers have continued to decline, with a particularly dramatic drop since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. As of the close of the 2022-2023 school year, we had only 430 students enrolled across all three schools. Unfortunately, this trend has continued, with a mere 101 students currently enrolled for the upcoming 2024-2025 school year. In light of this unprecedented decline, we believe it is in the best interest of the students and the community to focus on alternative educational opportunities and resources. We appreciate the dedication and hard work of our staff and students over the years and will work closely with stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition.
