MEMPHIS, Tenn. — An emotionally charged election has now seen several LGBTQ+ advocates in the Mid-South following the re-election of President-Elect Donald Trump.
In response, OUTMemphis released a statement on social media saying:
"This election was a dreadful verdict for the LGBTQ+ community and all the values we share, and we are all grimly awaiting what comes next. First: Take care of yourself, and each other, and trust that we will be in this fight together. Our solidarity is a foundation for our safety and our futures, and that’s especially important for trans, black, and brown people, who are most at risk under a MAGA regime.
At OUTMemphis we will not give one inch when it comes to our rights. We will be fearless in our defense of one another, and we will hold safe and affirming spaces within our walls. We have fought together in the Mid-South since the late 1980s, through years of crisis and changing movements for progress. Queer people affirm ourselves through surviving, and we won’t go back."
The non-profit has partnered with Mid-South Trans Nation to help create a safe space for people to talk about the election, cry, grieve and process the results. A Healing Space will be held Saturday Nov. 9 from 3 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. Details about the location will remain limited to protect the safety of attendees. Media and reporters will not be allowed at the event.
For more information about the location, participants can contact Mid-South Trans Nation Founder Jenna Lee Dunn at Jenna.Dunn@midsouthtransnation.org
OUTMemphis will assist in the event by providing care packages to all attendees.
