MEMPHIS, Tenn. — St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has proposed the construction of what they call the Advanced Research Center II (ARC II) at the corner of AW Willis and Danny Thomas Boulevard.
ARC II will be built on a 5.80-acre parcel and will replace three occupied buildings on the St. Jude campus, which will later be demolished to make room for the research center. ARC II is set to be around 16-stories or 280 ft. tall, according to officials.
The new development comes as part of St. Jude’s ongoing $12.9 billion expansion plan. Officials say the expansion is needed to provide better care to more of its patients.
"This expansion is necessary to allow St. Jude to continue its work to advance care and treatment for catastrophically ill children, and to further our mission to provide treatment, housing and, other support to patients and families who will never receive a bill from St. Jude," said an official with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
The plan also goes toward revitalizing the downtown neighborhood as well as the Pinch District, according to St. Jude's letter of intent filed with the Shelby County Division of Planning and Development.
ARC II has been zoned for the Uptown Hospital (UH) district and follow Unified Development Code guidelines for UH zoning, according to City of Memphis officials.
St. Jude along with the American Lebanese Syrian Associated Charities (ALSAC) sent a request for an Administrative Site Plan Review (ASPR) of the research center by City of Memphis officials before construction on the project begins.
