BARTLETT, Tenn. (localmemphis.com) — A warning about a Bartlett home repair company: an east Shelby County woman says the owner of Home Renewal Services took her money and then took off.
According to records, she’s not the only victim. Michelle Hughes hired Nick Hellums and his company Home Renewal Services in December.
He was supposed to build her a large entertainment center. Four months later, she doesn’t have the cabinet, and she’s out cash.
“I saved up for a whole year for this piece of furniture,” Hughes said.
Hughes said it was supposed to have been completed by Christmas…
She paid Home Renewal Services half of the more than $4,000 to begin construction.
Now, it’s four months past due, and the cabinet still hasn’t been delivered.
Hughes says Hellums has stopped responding to her calls and texts.
She posted her frustration on Facebook and says she found a long list of others who have had similar problems with the company.
“It sounds like a lot of people in the city of Memphis have fallen victim,” said Hughes.
Home Renewal Services has an “F” rating with the Better Business Bureau. In one complaint, someone paid him $4,500 for home repair work that was never done, and he wouldn’t return the money.
“In both cases, the consumers paid a deposit up front asked for their money back. He won’t refund it, and he is non-responsive,” said Randy Hutchinson, Better Business Bureau President and CEO.
According to court records Hellums, has eight judgements against him.
Hughes wonders hopes this serves as a warning to others.
“I just hope nobody else falls victim to him again,” said Hughes.
The Local I-Team went to Hellum’s home and left messages. He never responded. Hellums did, however, contact another member of the Local 24 News team that he is associated with asking that colleague if we would “kill” the story.
