Memphis Police investigators said officers were trying to stop a stolen Dodge Avenger about 10 a.m. at Kirby Pkwy. and Raines Rd. when the crash happened.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Memphis Police said two officers have been relieved of duty following a deadly crash Friday in southeast Memphis.

Initially, MPD said officers responded to the crash involving multiple vehicles about 10 a.m. in the area of Kirby Pkwy. and Raines Rd. They said one person died at the scene and five others were taken to hospitals in non-critical condition.

Friday afternoon, investigators said officers were attempting to stop a stolen Dodge Avenger at the time of the crash. They said the officers deployed stop sticks, and the driver in the stolen Avenger ran a red light moments later, crashing into four other vehicles.

Police said the driver in the stolen vehicle is the person who died.

Two officers have been relieved of duty pending the ongoing investigation.

The area at Kirby and Raines is shut down as police continue to investigate. Drivers are asked to use an alternate route.
