No foul play expected in house fire that left 2 dead in Lafayette County

The Lafayette County Fire Department was sent to the fire Monday, Feb. 19, at 6:30 a.m. on County Road 119. Fire had engulfed most of the home.

LAFAYETTE COUNTY, Miss — There is no foul play expected after a home caught fire Monday morning in Lafayette County and left two people dead, according to the Lafayette County Sheriff's Office (LCSO).

The Lafayette County Fire Department (LCFD) was sent to the fire Feb. 19 at 6:30 a.m. on County Road 119 Abbeville. Fire had engulfed most of the home, according to the fire department, and firefighters were told that there were possibly two people inside. 

They were able to remove one person from the home, but were forced to evacuate before they could find the second person. After getting the fire under control, firefighters found the second person, who was pronounced dead. The first person removed from the burning home was pronounced dead as well. 

LCSO said the two victims were 72 and 74 years old. 

The Mississippi State Fire Marshal’s office is helping with the ongoing investigation.
