Monday, August 13, Collierville High School students and faculty will be starting the school year in a brand-new facility.
Local 24 got a first look at the school and all it has to offer. Collierville’s Superintendent John Aitken gave us a look at the school, that accommodates 3,000 people, Saturday afternoon.
“Really, really really watching the kids go wow when they see this,” Aitken said during a media tour.
Designers used the latest technology to make this building a top tier school in Tennessee. A major concern while designing this school was security.
“You come into a security vestibule, you have to be buzzed into that and then enter into our main office and we go through a lot of background checks,” Aitken explained.
An auditorium seats 1,000 people with plenty of leg room. There is also a cafeteria that offers plenty of healthy options and seats 1,000 people. The new school also has a state-of-the-art library and a separate career tech wing designed to teach students a variety of trades and on the job skills. There are 107 regular classroom, four music classrooms, eight science labs, four computer labs, a STEM lab, auto mechanics shop, welding studio and 18 vocational classrooms.
“That they can satisfy those interests and move towards whatever their next phase in life is,” Aitken explained.
There are also 3 gymnasiums. The largest of the three seats 3,000 people.
Aitken also tells Local 24 News every Collierville High School student will receive a Mac Book Air to help them throughout high school. The $94 million-dollar facility is thanks to a raise in property taxes for Collierville residents.
“My hope and we’ll be preaching this to them, that they’ll appreciate the commitment that the town and their parents have made to pay in extra taxes for the construction of this facility,” Aitken said.
A ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Collierville High School. Mayor Stan Joyner and Senator Mark Norris are expected to be there. The building will also be open for a public walk-thru 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
